"Vintage," "thrift," "retro" and "deadstock" get used like they mean the same thing, but they don't. So what is considered vintage clothing, and how is it different from a thrifted hoodie or a new shirt made to look old? Here are the plain definitions, with examples.
Quick answer: Clothing is usually considered vintage once it's at least 20 years old, and antique once it's 100 or more. That's a trade convention, not a law, and some sellers use 25 or 30 years. In 2026, the 20-year rule covers anything made in 2006 or earlier. Retro means new clothes in an older style, and thrift means secondhand clothing of any age.
What is considered vintage clothing?
The 20-year rule
The most common rule is that clothing becomes vintage once it's at least 20 years old. Etsy, one of the biggest vintage marketplaces, uses the same line: items in its vintage category must be at least 20 years old, and newer "vintage-style" pieces don't qualify.
Because the rule is based on age, the line moves every year. In 2026, anything made in 2006 or earlier counts. In 2027, pieces from 2007 join them.
Why do some sellers say 25 or 30 years?
The 20-year rule is a convention, not a legal standard. No law defines vintage clothing, so the cutoff is set by sellers, marketplaces and collectors. Some hold out for 25 years (roughly a generation), and some guides use 30.
That means what is considered vintage clothing can shift a little from one seller to the next. When a listing says "vintage," check the tag and construction to see how old the piece really is. Our guides on how to tell if a shirt is vintage and how to tell if Levi's are vintage walk through the clues.
What is antique clothing?
Antique usually means 100 years or older, so in 2026 that's clothing made in 1926 or earlier. The 100-year line has deeper roots than the vintage rule: U.S. customs rules treat antiques as goods more than 100 years old. Antique clothing is rare, often fragile, and usually collected rather than worn.

What is the difference between vintage and retro?
Vintage is actually old. Retro (also called vintage-inspired or vintage-style) is new clothing made to look like an earlier era. A 1994 tee with a cracked print is vintage. A tee printed last year with a 70s-style graphic is retro.
Retro isn't a bad thing, it's just a different thing. Because it's new, it's usually easier to find in your size, but it won't have the age or the original tags of the real piece.
What is a reproduction?
A reproduction (or "repro") is a close, newly made copy of a specific older garment. Levi's Vintage Clothing, for example, remakes pieces from the Levi's archive using their original fits and details. Good repros can fool people, which is why tags, stitching and hardware matter when you're paying for true vintage.
What is the difference between vintage and thrift?
Thrift means secondhand clothing of any age, usually donated to a thrift store. One rack can hold a hoodie from last year next to a jacket from 1985. "Thrifting" also gets used loosely for any secondhand shopping.
Secondhand (or pre-owned) means someone owned it before. Almost all vintage you buy is secondhand, but most secondhand clothing isn't vintage. The difference is age.
What are resale and consignment?
Resale shops buy clothing from sellers up front and resell it. Consignment shops sell items on the owner's behalf and pay them a share after the piece sells. Both can carry vintage, newer secondhand, or a mix.
What does deadstock mean?
Deadstock is old stock that was never sold or worn, often still carrying its original tags. It's also called new old stock. A sweatshirt made in 1996 that sat in a warehouse and still has its hang tag is deadstock vintage.
Deadstock doesn't always mean perfect. Decades in storage can leave fading along the edges, dust marks or discoloration, so read the condition notes.
What do NWT and NWOT mean?
NWT means new with tags: unworn, with the original tags still attached. NWOT means new without tags: unworn, but the tags are gone. Neither says anything about age. An NWT shirt from last year is just new, while an NWT shirt from 1996 is deadstock.
Is Y2K clothing considered vintage?
Y2K refers to the style of roughly the late 1990s through the mid-2000s: low-rise jeans, tracksuits, platform shoes, metallic fabrics and big logos.
By the 20-year rule, most of it now counts. In 2026, anything made in 2006 or earlier is at least 20 years old, which covers nearly the whole Y2K era. A pair of jeans actually made in 2003 is vintage today.
The catch: "Y2K" is also used as a style label for new clothes. Low-rise jeans made in 2025 are Y2K-style, which makes them retro, not vintage. For more on the real thing, see our Y2K jeans guide.
Why does the difference matter when you shop?
- Price. True vintage and deadstock often cost more than newer secondhand pieces because they're older and harder to find. Knowing the terms helps you judge whether a price matches what you're getting.
- Quality. Age alone doesn't guarantee quality. Some older pieces have heavier fabrics and details that are hard to find now, and some were cheap then and are simply old now.
- Tags. Tags are your best evidence of age. Retro pieces and reproductions can look old, but their tags usually give them away.
- Fit. Vintage sizing doesn't match modern sizing, so shop by measurements, not the size on the tag.
