Eddie Bauer is one of the most common outdoor brands on any thrift rack. Most of it is solid clothing from the 1980s to the 2010s, and a few pieces are much older. Here is how to date vintage Eddie Bauer by its labels, which pieces to hunt for, how it fits and what to check before you buy.
Quick answer: To date vintage Eddie Bauer, start with the logo. A "sun" label with a rising sun over ice points to roughly the 1930s through the 1960s. The cursive Eddie Bauer signature replaced it in the late 1960s and stayed until 2023. A block-letter logo with a flying goose means 2023 or newer. Within the long script era, tag wording like "Since 1920," mountain graphics and the country of origin help narrow the decade, but they are rough clues, not exact dates.
How do you tell if Eddie Bauer is vintage?
Check four things, in this order:
- The logo. Sun label, cursive script or goose. This gives you the broad era.
- The tag wording and graphics. "Since 1920," mountain artwork, line names and old taglines.
- Where it was made. "Made in USA" is more common on older pieces. Most Eddie Bauer from the 2000s on was made overseas.
- The construction. Real goose down fill, heavy cotton, metal zippers and a leather patch on jeans all fit older pieces.
Use clues that agree with each other. A script label alone covers more than 50 years. For the general method, see how to tell if a shirt is vintage.
What did old Eddie Bauer labels look like?
The sun label (about 1930s to 1960s)
The earliest label most collectors will ever see is the sun logo: a gold sun rising over a blue ice field, with "Bauer" in red on a black background. It was used from the 1930s into the 1960s. On down jackets from this era you will often see the words "Bauer Down" and "Blizzard Proof," the phrases Eddie Bauer used to advertise his quilted down jacket starting in 1936. Sun-label pieces are rare on a normal thrift rack.
WWII military tags
During World War II the company made more than 50,000 B-9 flight parkas plus down sleeping bags for the military, and it was allowed to put its own label on that gear. These are collector pieces sold mostly by specialist dealers.
The script logo (late 1960s to 2023)
In the late 1960s the cursive Eddie Bauer signature replaced the sun logo, and it stayed for more than 50 years. Collectors single out earlier script labels, often gold script on a black label, as the more desirable ones.
"Since 1920" and outfitter wording
Many script-era tags add "Since 1920" (the year Eddie Bauer opened his first shop in Seattle), mountain graphics, or "Outdoor Outfitter" wording. Collector guides tie these mostly to the 1990s and 2000s, but treat them as a sign of the late script era, not a date. The leather patch on older Eddie Bauer jeans often carries "Since 1920" and "Outdoor Outfitters" next to the signature.
You may also see "Expedition Outfitter" in older Eddie Bauer advertising. That was the company's tagline during its mountaineering years, and it was dropped as the brand moved into casual lifestyle clothing.
Line names (2000s and 2010s)
Tags that name a sub-line, like "EBTEK," "Legend" or "First Ascent," are newer. First Ascent, the technical mountaineering line, launched in 2009.
The goose logo (2023 to today)
In 2023 Eddie Bauer replaced the script with all-caps block lettering and a flying goose, a nod to the goose down in its first jackets. The new logo spread across all products by fall 2024. Any tag with the goose is recent.

Which vintage Eddie Bauer pieces are worth buying?
Down jackets and parkas
Down is what made the brand. Eddie Bauer's Skyliner jacket was patented in 1940 as the first quilted down jacket in the United States, and its diamond quilting is still the brand's signature. The Kara Koram parka was built for the 1953 American K2 expedition, and Jim Whittaker wore Eddie Bauer down in 1963 when he became the first American to summit Everest. The down jackets and parkas you will find on a thrift rack are later, but many are still real goose down and very warm.
Ridgeline and other named parkas
The Ridgeline name shows up on down parkas that sellers usually date to the 1980s and 1990s, some with Gore-Tex shells. We have not found an official date for the model, so check the tags as you would with any other piece.
Flannel-lined jeans
These are a Midwest winter favorite: regular five-pocket denim with a soft plaid cotton flannel lining, usually red or blue plaid. Older pairs often have a leather patch on the back waistband with the script logo. They are warmer than regular jeans without the bulk of snow pants.
Chamois and flannel shirts
Eddie Bauer's chamois shirts are made of heavy brushed cotton with a suede-like feel, and they are one of the most-searched vintage pieces from the brand. Its regular plaid flannels are more common and cheaper. For how Eddie Bauer flannels compare to other brands, see our guide to the best vintage flannel brands.
Fleece
Eddie Bauer fleece jackets, vests and quarter zips are easy to find and usually cheaper than Patagonia or The North Face. See our vintage fleece guide.
How does vintage Eddie Bauer fit compared to modern?
Older Eddie Bauer tends to run roomy. Down jackets and parkas were cut with space for layers, and shirts from the 1980s and 1990s are fuller through the body than most modern cuts. Some collector guides also note that older quilted jackets can have shorter sleeves than you would expect from the chest size.
Eddie Bauer also made a lot of Tall sizes, like L Tall and XL Tall, with extra length in the body and sleeves. If you are not tall, check the length before you buy one.
Compare the pit-to-pit and length measurements to a jacket you already own. Our guide to buying vintage clothes online explains how.
What should you check on used Eddie Bauer?
- Down loss and clumping. Squeeze each baffle. Flat, empty sections or hard clumps mean lost or matted down.
- Smell. Old down can hold a musty smell that is hard to wash out.
- Shell damage. Look for small tears, burn holes and taped repairs on nylon shells, especially at the cuffs and pocket edges.
- Zippers and snaps. Run every zipper fully. A broken main zipper on a parka is a real repair cost.
- Flannel lining. On lined jeans, check the lining at the knees, seat and pocket bags for thin spots and tears.

How much is vintage Eddie Bauer worth?
Value depends on era, type and condition. Sun-label down, WWII pieces and original Skyliners and Kara Korams sit at the top and are mostly sold by specialist dealers. Named down parkas from the 1980s and 1990s come next. Everyday script-era flannels, fleece, sweaters and jeans are the affordable end.
At ThriftManGuy, most of our Eddie Bauer shirts, fleece and sweaters are priced under $30, and our down jackets and parkas run from about $20 to about $55 depending on fill and condition. Each piece is graded Excellent, Very Good or Good, so you know about wear before you order. For more warm options across brands, see our list of the best used winter jackets.
FAQ
How can you tell how old an Eddie Bauer jacket is?
Start with the logo. A sun label points to about the 1930s to 1960s, a cursive script label to the late 1960s through 2022, and a goose logo to 2023 or later. Then use "Since 1920" wording, mountain graphics, line names and the country of origin to narrow the script era.
When did Eddie Bauer change its logo?
Eddie Bauer replaced its cursive signature logo with block letters and a flying goose in 2023, and the new logo reached all products by fall 2024. Before that, the script logo had been in use since the late 1960s.
Is Eddie Bauer made in the USA?
Older pieces often were. Most Eddie Bauer from the 2000s on was made in countries like China, Bangladesh and Mexico, so "Made in USA" usually points to an older piece.
What is the Eddie Bauer Skyliner?
The Skyliner is Eddie Bauer's diamond-quilted goose down jacket, patented in 1940 as the first quilted down jacket in the United States. The company still sells modern versions.
Do vintage Eddie Bauer jackets run big?
Usually, yes. Older down jackets and parkas were cut roomy for layering. Check the pit-to-pit and length measurements instead of trusting the tag size, and watch for Tall sizes if you want extra length.
