Vintage NFL Apparel and College Sweatshirts: Makers and Dating

Vintage NFL apparel from the 80s and 90s came from a short list of licensed makers, and most of them were sold, renamed or out of business by the early 2000s. That makes the tag one of the best dating tools you have. This guide covers the big names, Starter jackets, how to date a tee or crewneck, and what to know about vintage college sweatshirts.

Quick answer: To date vintage NFL apparel, start with the tag. Makers like Starter, Logo 7, Salem Sportswear, Nutmeg Mills, Chalk Line and Apex One mostly point to the 1980s and 1990s. Then check for single stitch hems, a printed copyright year, "Made in USA," and team logos or names that have since changed, like the Houston Oilers or the LA Raiders.

Who made vintage NFL apparel in the 80s and 90s?

Back then the NFL licensed its logos to lots of companies at once, so the same team could show up on a Starter jacket, a Salem tee and a Nutmeg crewneck in the same season. That era largely ended in 2002, when Reebok's 10-year exclusive NFL apparel deal took effect. Nike took over the on-field license in 2012.

So a tag from one of the names below usually means something from before the early 2000s. Treat the dates as rough, since these companies were bought, renamed and wound down over several years.

Maker Roughly when Signature pieces
Starter NFL license from 1983; bankruptcy in 1999 Satin snap-front jackets, pullover half-zip jackets, snapback caps
Logo 7 (later Logo Athletic) Indianapolis company from around 1970; renamed Logo Athletic in the late 90s; bankrupt in 2000 Graphic tees, crewnecks and jackets
Salem Sportswear New Hampshire company founded around 1980; biggest in the late 80s and early 90s; sold to Fruit of the Loom in 1993 "Big head" caricature tees, oversized team graphic tees
Nutmeg Mills Tampa, Florida; league licenses through the 80s; bought by VF in 1994; label phased out by about 2000 Oversized tees and crewnecks with bold, comic-book style art
Chalk Line NFL jackets from 1984; faded out after Russell bought it in 1994 Satin jackets, "Fanimation" jackets with original artwork on the back
Apex One Roughly 1989 to the mid 90s NFL Pro Line jackets, puffer jackets, on-field jerseys
Pro Player Mid to late 90s (a Fruit of the Loom brand from 1994) Jackets and other athletic outerwear, sweatshirts
Russell Athletic Founded 1902; team and college sweats for decades Crewnecks and hoodies, eagle "R" logo tags
Champion Founded 1919; team tees from the 70s, college gear for decades Reverse Weave crewnecks and hoodies, 70s "blue bar" tag tees

Logo Athletic went bankrupt in 2000 and Reebok bought the operation in 2001, so a Logo Athletic tag narrows things to roughly the late 90s.

What makes a vintage Starter jacket special?

Starter was founded in New Haven, Connecticut in 1971 and landed its NFL license in 1983. It filed for bankruptcy in 1999, and the name has been sold several times since. Original NFL Starter jackets mostly date from the mid 80s to the late 90s.

Satin jackets

The satin snap-front is the 80s classic: a glossy shell, snap buttons, a striped rib-knit collar and cuffs, and a quilted lining. Chalk Line made satin team jackets too, and its gold satin 49ers jacket is one of the best-known pieces of the era.

Pullover jackets

In the early 90s the Starter "breakaway" pullover took over. It was modeled on the sideline parkas Starter made for NFL coaches. Look for a half-zip neck, a hood, a side zipper, a big front pouch pocket and a heavy nylon shell.

How to date a Starter jacket

  • Check the team logo against the years it was used (see the list below).
  • League program tags like NFL Pro Line are common on early 90s jackets.
  • Made in Korea does not mean fake. Plenty of authentic vintage Starter was made overseas.
  • Starter sells retro-style jackets today, so check the inside labels for current manufacturing details before assuming a jacket is old.

How do you tell if an NFL shirt is vintage?

No single detail proves a shirt's age. Look for three or four clues that agree. Our guide on how to tell if a shirt is vintage goes deeper on tags and fabric.

Read the tag

The makers in the table above point to the 80s and 90s. Blank brands help too. Screen Stars, Hanes and Champion are common on 70s and 80s shirts, while a Gildan or Alstyle tag usually means around 2000 or newer.

Check the stitching

Look at the sleeve cuffs and bottom hem. A single row of stitching shows up on most tees made through the early to mid 90s, and double stitching took over in the late 90s. Many older tees are also tubular, with no side seams.

Find the copyright year

Licensed NFL graphics usually include a small printed copyright line with a year, often under the design. It dates the artwork, not the exact print run, but the two are usually close. A copyright year that doesn't match the era of the tag is a red flag.

Look for "Made in USA"

Most licensed sports apparel production moved overseas by the mid to late 90s, so Made in USA usually points older. It is a clue, not proof.

Use team names and logos that changed

This is the most useful clue on sports gear. A team name or logo that no longer exists tells you the latest a piece was likely made, unless it is a modern throwback (the tag will tell you).

  • Los Angeles Raiders: 1982 to 1994. The team moved back to Oakland in 1995 and to Las Vegas in 2020.
  • St. Louis Rams: the Rams left Los Angeles for St. Louis in 1995 and returned to LA in 2016.
  • Houston Oilers: left Houston in 1997 and became the Tennessee Titans in 1999.
  • Cleveland Browns: the original team moved to Baltimore and became the Ravens in 1996. Cleveland got a new Browns team in 1999.
  • Phoenix Cardinals: the name used from 1988 until the team became the Arizona Cardinals in 1994.
  • Logo changes: the Patriots dropped the "Pat Patriot" logo in 1993, and the Broncos and Buccaneers both switched to new logos in 1997.

What should Fargo-Moorhead fans look for in vintage Vikings and NDSU gear?

Around here it's Bison green and Vikings purple, and both teams have a timeline you can read on old gear.

NDSU Bison

NDSU won Division II national titles in 1983, 1985, 1986, 1988 and 1990, and moved from Dacotah Field into the Fargodome in 1993. The program moved up to Division I in 2004, and won ten FCS titles between 2011 and 2024. Title years, "Division II" wording and the stadium name all help place a piece.

Minnesota Vikings

The Vikings played in the Metrodome from 1982 through the 2013 season. The Norseman logo was refreshed in 2013 with shorter, thicker braids and shorter horns, so a close look at the logo helps separate newer gear from older.

Every piece we list is one of one, so the football and college collections change as things sell.

What should you know about vintage college sweatshirts?

College crewnecks and hoodies were sold through campus bookstores for decades, which is why so many survive. The same dating rules apply: tag, stitching, Made in USA, and logos that have since changed. The labels you will see most:

  • Champion: the best known. College Reverse Weave crewnecks and hoodies are the classic. See our guide to dating Champion Reverse Weave.
  • Russell Athletic: founded in 1902 in Alexander City, Alabama. Tags with the eagle "R" logo are common on 70s and 80s pieces.
  • Jansport: known for backpacks, but also a big college apparel label. Many 80s and 90s Jansport crewnecks are Made in USA.
  • Galt Sand: a fleece label that shows up on plenty of late 80s and 90s college and pro sweatshirts.

How does vintage sports apparel fit?

Tagged sizes from the 80s and 90s rarely line up with modern sizing.

  • Older tees: often shorter and boxier than modern shirts.
  • 80s and 90s college crewnecks: often roomy and oversized.
  • 90s Starter jackets: relaxed, often oversized cuts.
  • Champion Reverse Weave: boxy and short in the body, with wide armholes.

The fix is simple: ignore the tag size and go by measurements. At ThriftManGuy we measure every piece by hand and list the pit-to-pit and length, so lay a shirt or sweatshirt you like flat, measure it, and compare. Our vintage sizing guide walks through it.

FAQ

When were Starter jackets popular?

Starter jackets peaked from the late 1980s through the mid 1990s. Starter got its NFL license in 1983 and filed for bankruptcy in 1999, so most original NFL Starter jackets were made in that window.

Is Logo 7 the same company as Logo Athletic?

Yes. Logo 7 was an Indianapolis sports apparel maker that renamed itself Logo Athletic in the late 1990s and went bankrupt in 2000. A Logo 7 tag usually points to the 80s or 90s, and a Logo Athletic tag to the late 90s.

Does single stitch mean an NFL shirt is vintage?

Usually. Most tees with one row of stitching on the sleeves and hem were made before the mid to late 1990s, but some newer shirts copy the look, so check the tag and print too.

What is the fastest way to date vintage NFL apparel?

Check the team name and logo. A Houston Oilers, Los Angeles Raiders or Phoenix Cardinals piece was almost always made before those names changed in the 1990s, unless the tag shows it is a modern throwback.

Who made most vintage college sweatshirts?

Champion and Russell Athletic are the most common labels, with Jansport and Galt Sand also turning up often. A Made in USA tag usually points to the 1990s or earlier.
