Harley-Davidson shirts are their own corner of vintage. Dealers sold their own shirts, rallies printed new designs every year, and the eagle and bar and shield graphics never went out of style, so plenty of Harley tees look older than they are. Here is how to date a vintage Harley-Davidson shirt from the tag, the stitching, the print and the dealer back, and how to spot a reprint.
Quick answer: To date a vintage Harley-Davidson shirt, start with the tag. Holoubek and 3D Emblem tags usually point to the 1980s or early 90s, and a Hanes, Screen Stars or Jerzees blank marked "Made in USA" points to the same era. Single stitched hems suggest the mid 1990s or earlier. A printed copyright year only tells you the earliest the shirt could be, so check that the tag, stitching and print all agree.
How do you date a vintage Harley-Davidson shirt?
No single detail proves a Harley tee is old. Look for clues that agree, in this order:
- The neck tag: who made the shirt, what it is made of and where.
- The hem stitching on the sleeves and bottom.
- The print: copyright line, rally year and how the ink has aged.
- The back: dealer name, city and any year printed there.
- The fabric and fit.
A shirt is never older than its newest detail. If the graphic says 1989 but the tag is a printed tagless label, it is a 2000s shirt or newer. The same rules apply to any tee, and our guide on how to tell if a shirt is vintage covers them in more depth.
Which tags are on vintage Harley-Davidson shirts?
Harley-Davidson has long licensed its apparel to outside screen printers, who sold shirts through the dealer network. So a vintage Harley tee can carry the licensee's tag, a Harley-branded tag, or a plain blank from Hanes or another maker. Collectors date these tags by matching them to shirts with rally years and dates printed on them, so treat the eras below as rough.
| Tag | Usual era on Harley tees | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Holoubek | 1980s to mid 1990s | A Wisconsin licensee that sold Harley shirts only through dealerships. It had worked with Harley for over 20 years when VF Imagewear agreed to buy it in late 2004. |
| 3D Emblem | 1980s to early 1990s | Common on biker, trucker, military and Sturgis shirts, and on many Harley dealer tees. Usually thin 50/50 fabric. |
| R.K. Stratman | 1990s to today | A family-owned printer in Wentzville, Missouri whose Harley connection goes back to 1969, and it still prints licensed Harley shirts. The name alone does not make a shirt vintage. Look at the tag style, country and stitching. |
| Harley-Davidson branded tag | 1980s to today | Older tags are simple woven labels with the bar and shield. Later tags carry more licensing and care text and usually read Mexico, Honduras or another country instead of USA. |
| Hanes (Beefy-T, Fifty-Fifty) | 1970s to 1990s | Many dealer shirts were printed on Hanes blanks. The Beefy-T launched in 1975 and is still made, so a USA tag and older tag design matter more than the name. |
| Screen Stars, Jerzees, Fruit of the Loom | 1980s to early 1990s | Standard printing blanks of the era. "Made in USA" versions are the ones that point to vintage. |
| Gildan, printed neck labels | 2000s and later | Most Gildan-tagged Harley tees are newer. Hanes launched tagless tees in 2002, so a printed label in the neck means 2000s or later. |
Other tag clues
- Country of origin. Most US t-shirt sewing moved to Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean after NAFTA took effect in 1994. "Made in USA" is a good sign, not a guarantee.
- RN number. US tags often list an RN number. The FTC's RN database tells you which company it belongs to, which helps when a tag has faded.
Does single stitch mean a Harley shirt is vintage?
Look at the sleeve cuffs and the bottom hem. A single row of stitching was standard on tees through the 1980s and early 90s. Makers switched to double stitching during the mid to late 1990s, at different times, and it was the norm by the early 2000s.
Single stitch on a Harley tee with a Holoubek or 3D Emblem tag is a strong match. Single stitch on its own is not proof, because some modern blanks and reproduction shirts use single-needle hems on purpose.
Is the copyright date on a Harley shirt the year it was made?
Not always. Many Harley graphics carry a copyright line near the bottom of the print, like "© 1990 H-D." That is the year the artwork was copyrighted, not the year that shirt came off the press. A stock design could be printed for several seasons with the same date, and official reissues and bootlegs usually keep the original line.
Treat the copyright year as the earliest the shirt could be. Then check the tag and stitching. A 1988 copyright on a double stitched shirt with a Honduras tag is a later print of an 80s design.
Rally and event years are stronger
Rally shirts are easier. Sturgis, Daytona Bike Week and H.O.G. rally shirts print the event year right in the design, and they were sold at or around that event. Recent racks here have included H.O.G. rally shirts from 1997 (Medora), 1999 and 2001. An event year that agrees with the tag and stitching is about as close to a birth certificate as a tee gets.
What does the dealer back print tell you?
Flip the shirt over. Most Harley dealer tees have a stock front graphic and the dealership's name and city printed on the back. The licensee sold the design, and each dealer added its own name.
The back print helps with dating in two ways:
- Dealer names change. Dealerships move, merge and rename. If you know when a local dealer used a certain name or address, the back narrows the window.
- Anniversaries and years. Some backs print a year or an anniversary, like a dealership's 50th.
The back print is also a big part of the appeal. Buyers hunt for their hometown dealer or a far-off one. Recent racks here have included tees from Fargo, Grand Forks, La Crosse, Hill City, South Dakota, Scottsdale, Chicago and Nassau, Bahamas. Since we are in Moorhead, MN, we see a lot of Fargo-Moorhead and Upper Midwest dealer shirts.
How can you tell a Harley shirt's age by fabric and fit?
- 80s shirts are often thin 50/50 blends that feel soft and slightly see-through. The cotton fades while the polyester holds color, which gives them a heathered look.
- 90s shirts tend to be heavier 100% cotton with a boxier cut.
- 2000s and newer shirts are usually heavier, stiffer cotton with a bright, glossy print.
Old screen prints sit on top of the fabric and crack with wear. Fine cracking and fading that match the wear on the rest of the shirt, like the collar, shoulders and hem, are a good sign. Even, all-over fading usually comes from a factory wash.
Older tees also run shorter and boxier than modern shirts, so the tag size is only a starting point. Compare the pit-to-pit and length to a tee you already own, and see our vintage sizing guide.
How do you spot a fake or reprint Harley shirt?
Fakes come in three kinds. Official reissues are licensed shirts made today with old style artwork. Bootlegs are unlicensed copies. Then there are shirts dressed up to pass as old, with single stitching, distressing and swapped tags. Watch for:
- A copyright or rally year that does not match the tag era.
- Double stitched hems on a shirt sold as 80s.
- A printed neck label on a supposed 80s or 90s shirt.
- A bar and shield logo with odd proportions, fuzzy lettering or the wrong trademark marks.
- A thick, perfectly smooth print on a shirt that looks worn everywhere else.
- Neat, even cracking or distressing that looks printed on.
A reprint can pass one test. It rarely passes all of them.
FAQ
What years are Holoubek Harley shirts from?
Most Holoubek Harley-Davidson tees collectors find date from the 1980s to the mid 1990s. Holoubek was a Wisconsin licensee that sold through Harley dealerships, and VF Imagewear agreed to buy it in late 2004.
Are R.K. Stratman Harley shirts vintage?
Some are. R.K. Stratman has printed Harley apparel for decades and still makes licensed Harley shirts today. A Stratman tag with Made in USA and single stitching points older. A newer tag style with an overseas country points to a recent shirt.
Does a copyright date prove when a Harley shirt was made?
No. It is the year the artwork was copyrighted, and reprints keep it. Use it as the earliest possible year.
When did Harley shirts stop being single stitch?
Like most tees, during the mid to late 1990s. Each printer and blank maker switched on its own schedule, so there is no exact year.
Why do Harley shirts have a city on the back?
Dealers ordered stock designs from licensed printers with their own name and city added on the back.
